“Don’t believe everything you think.” – Francis Sling

The Story Behind the Wall

On a wall at Henry Mack / Little River Elementary School in Miami, a mural by Curaçaoan artist Francis Sling tells a quiet but powerful story about perspective.

It begins with something small.

One day, the artist imagined meeting a small piece of toilet paper. In his mind, the paper was sad. It believed its whole life had only one purpose: to clean dirt. That was all it thought it was meant for.

Francis looked at it and said something simple:

“Don’t believe everything you think.”

He asked the paper a question.
If nothing gets clean without you, how could you be less? Who decided that your role made you small?

To challenge that thought, he painted on it. Not to make it more important, and not to change what it was—but as a reminder. A reminder that value is often misunderstood, and that the way we see things can transform their meaning.

That small artwork, once painted on a fragile piece of toilet paper, has now grown into something much larger. Today it lives on the wall of a school in Miami, expanded into a mural filled with flowing color, movement, and handwritten reflections that weave through the composition.

Students who pass the wall encounter a message hidden in the story: that identity and worth are not fixed by what we think we are supposed to be. Sometimes the smallest things hold the greatest purpose.

The presence of this mural in Miami is also the continuation of a relationship that began years earlier. Francis Sling first collaborated with ArtisA in 2016, when he participated in the first Mural Festival of the Aruba Art Fair. The following year, he joined Art Fashion, another project developed during Art Week Aruba. Those early collaborations created a lasting creative connection that eventually led to this opportunity.

The mural was created during the recent visit of Their Majesties King Willem‑Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands to Miami, as part of a cultural initiative highlighting artists from the Dutch Caribbean. With the support of partners including Aruba Tourism Authority, Curaçao Tourist Board, DutchCulture USA, and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Miami, the project brought Caribbean artistic voices into the public space of the city.

Yet at its heart, the mural remains a simple conversation.

A conversation between an artist and a small piece of paper.

And through that story, Francis Sling leaves the students of Miami with a gentle reminder painted across the wall:

Do not believe everything you think.

“Be Inspired by Art”: Rasheed’s First International Mural

The Story Behind the Wall

Titled “Be Inspired by Art”, this mural reflects identity, journey, and connection.

On the left, a black and white portrait emerging from nature represents the artist’s inner world, the place where creativity begins through reflection and emotion. At the center, Miami appears through warm sunsets and palm trees, capturing the energy of the city and the moment where cultures meet. As an artist from Aruba painting in Miami, Rasheed brings his Caribbean perspective into a new environment.

On the right, the flags of Aruba and the United States appear alongside Dutch tulips, honoring heritage and the cultural partnerships that helped make the project possible.

Installed inside a school, the mural serves as a message to students that creativity can open doors and that inspiration can come from anywhere.

Rasheed’s journey began in San Nicolas, Aruba’s cultural center for mural art and home of the Aruba Art Fair, organized by ArtisA.

At just 13 years old, Rasheed was discovered by ArtisA, where founder and director Tito Bolivar recognized his talent and potential. Together with the ArtisA team, including board member Jody Leanes, the organization mentored and supported Rasheed until he turned 18.

Inspired early on by international artists such as Portuguese muralist Mr. Dheo, Rasheed began developing his own voice as a muralist. At 15, he painted his first official mural at the Aruba Art Fair, and at 18, he returned to create his second mural, showing the growth of his artistic journey.

ArtisA’s first mural in Miami

The opportunity to paint in Miami came through Maidi from the Dutch Consulate in Miami, opening the door for this international collaboration.

With this project, ArtisA realized its first international mural, created by Rasheed and supported on site by Tito Bolivar and Jody Leanes, who traveled to Miami to stand beside the young artist they had mentored for years.

The mural, created in a school environment, is now recognized as the first official mural by an Aruban muralist in the United States.

Rasheed’s journey from a 13 year old inspired by murals in San Nicolas to a 21 year old artist painting internationally reflects ArtisA’s ongoing commitment to developing young artists and sharing the creative spirit of Aruba with the world.

Through Art in Miami

During the recent visit of Their Majesties King Willem‑Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands to Miami, ArtisA facilitated the creation of two murals at Henry Mack / Little River Elementary School, highlighting the artistic voices of the Dutch Caribbean.

The project featured Rasheed Lowe from Aruba and Francis Sling from Curaçao. Rasheed Lowe’s mural represents what is believed to be the first mural painted by an Aruban artist in Miami, marking an important milestone for the international visibility of Aruban public art. By bringing together artists from both islands, ArtisA proudly created a collaboration that connected Aruba, Curaçao, and the Netherlands through public art.

This opportunity was made possible thanks to the continued support of Aruba Tourism Authority, a valued partner of ArtisA since 2016, whose commitment to promoting Aruban culture internationally helped make this project possible. Special recognition goes to Derchlien Dijkhoff, Senior Product Specialist at Aruba Tourism Authority, whose strategic vision and ongoing support have played an important role in creating opportunities that position Aruban culture and creativity on the international stage.

ArtisA also extends sincere gratitude to CTB Curaçao Tourism Board, who stepped in without hesitation to support the participation of Francis Sling, ensuring that Curaçao could stand proudly alongside Aruba in this international collaboration.

Additional support was provided by DutchCulture USA, as well as Maidi Maduro, Economic Policy Officer at the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, whose encouragement helped open the door for this initiative and Denis Leeflang from the Aruba and Curaçao team at the post in Washington D.C

The project also created new opportunities for the future. ArtisA has been invited to return to Miami in November to create a mural at a police station, and will also participate for the second time in Red Dot Miami, continuing its mission of bringing Caribbean artists to international audiences.

This collaboration demonstrated how art can connect communities across borders—bringing Aruba, Curaçao, and the Netherlands together in Miami, and marking the beginning of many more projects to come.

Red Dot Miami 2025

In December 2025, ArtisA proudly represented Aruba at Red Dot Miami, marking a defining milestone for our creative community and the international unveiling of Art Week Aruba 2026. During our time at one of the world’s most vibrant contemporary art fairs, we introduced the 2026 theme, Nature x Mankind— a concept that explores the evolving relationship between humanity and the natural world, and the responsibility we share in shaping its future.

Through a carefully curated presentation of Aruban artists, ArtisA invited international audiences to reflect on coexistence, resilience, and renewal. The exhibition highlighted the balance between progress and preservation, demonstrating how art can serve as a bridge between people, place, and purpose. By debuting this theme in Miami, we reaffirmed our mission to connect Aruba’s creative voices with the global art scene and to position San Nicolas as a rising cultural hub where nature, humanity, and creativity meet in harmony.

A Milestone Moment in Miami

Our experience at Red Dot Miami 2025 was filled with meaningful connections and proud achievements. Together with Perseus Gallery, we were honored to receive the Best Booth Setup Award, recognizing the strength of our vision, creativity, and collaboration.

We were also privileged to connect with Eric, the art fair owner—an encounter that opened new doors and confirmed exciting news for the future: ArtisA will return to Red Dot Miami with its own dedicated gallery booth in December 2026.

Throughout the fair, we were deeply honored to welcome visitors from Aruba, the Dutch Consulate, and our American friends who return to Aruba year after year. Their presence reminded us that ArtisA is more than an exhibition—it is a shared story that continues to grow across borders and communities.

Looking Ahead at RED DOT MIAMI 2026

What we achieved in 2025 was only the beginning. We are returning to Red Dot Miami in December 2026 (December 3–7), stronger and more determined to continue elevating Aruba’s artists on the global stage. Any funding or support we receive will go directly toward making this journey possible—supporting our artists, expanding our presence, and strengthening Aruba’s voice in the international art world.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to ATACCG, and all the individuals who paved the way, believed in the vision, and supported ArtisA every step of the way.

If our journey resonates with you, we invite you to be part of it.

INSPIRED BY THE MASTERS

In the “Inspired by the Masters” series, Kim Violenes brings her own characters to life by weaving in stylistic elements inspired by some of history’s most celebrated artists. As a self-taught artist with limited exposure to traditional galleries, this series became an invaluable learning journey, allowing her to explore and experiment with the techniques of the great masters she has long admired. This creative process has been both humbling and inspiring, as Kim discovered new perspectives and methods that have since become integral to her broader body of work. Through this fusion, she not only pays homage to these artistic pioneers but also enriches her own style, blending their genius with her distinct vision. This series stands as a testament to her growth and deep respect for art history, carrying forward the influence of these icons into her evolving artistic expression.

I AM FOREVER 27

In the “I AM FOREVER 27” series, Kim Violenes honors the influential musicians who make up the symbolic “27 Club.” This legendary group, including Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison of The Doors, left an indelible mark on music and culture before passing away between 1969 and 1971, each at the age of 27. Many gifted and complex artists have since joined this legacy. Through her art, Kim reflects on their extraordinary talent and turbulent lives, celebrating their lasting contributions to the world of music.
