Born in Aruba in 1982, Kim Violenes found art early as a way to express herself. After a demanding work life led her away from art, she returned to it full-time in 2015, selling her belongings to pursue her passion. Kim spent several years traveling, trading her artwork for essentials, before resettling in Aruba in 2019. The island’s flora and fauna inspire much of her recent work.
During the pandemic, Kim started creating pet portraits, a project that brings her immense joy. Her “I AM” series, inspired by global tribal traditions, marks her venture into realistic human portraiture. A self-taught artist, Kim continues to grow in her craft.
CHILDHOOD SERIES
In the “I AM” series, Kim Violenes has crafted a unique fusion that intertwines elements from her childhood drawings with her current, more refined painting style. This creative process has felt like a dance between her past and present selves, capturing an evolving dialogue that bridges innocence with experience. Each piece carries a deeply personal touch, embodying parts of Kim’s identity, yet they remain lighthearted and even whimsical, embracing humor and a touch of the absurd. This combination of nostalgia and bold originality makes the series intriguing and visually compelling, offering a fresh and unexpected perspective into her artistic journey.
INSPIRED BY THE MASTERS
In the “Inspired by the Masters” series, Kim Violenes brings her own characters to life by weaving in stylistic elements inspired by some of history’s most celebrated artists. As a self-taught artist with limited exposure to traditional galleries, this series became an invaluable learning journey, allowing her to explore and experiment with the techniques of the great masters she has long admired. This creative process has been both humbling and inspiring, as Kim discovered new perspectives and methods that have since become integral to her broader body of work. Through this fusion, she not only pays homage to these artistic pioneers but also enriches her own style, blending their genius with her distinct vision. This series stands as a testament to her growth and deep respect for art history, carrying forward the influence of these icons into her evolving artistic expression.
I AM FOREVER 27
In the “I AM FOREVER 27” series, Kim Violenes honors the influential musicians who make up the symbolic “27 Club.” This legendary group, including Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison of The Doors, left an indelible mark on music and culture before passing away between 1969 and 1971, each at the age of 27. Many gifted and complex artists have since joined this legacy. Through her art, Kim reflects on their extraordinary talent and turbulent lives, celebrating their lasting contributions to the world of music.
